After looking into the errata thing, it appears we got an older version of the PDF for review. If you buy the book now most of the issues I ran into should be corrected. If you buy the PDF you get free updates whenever it is revised. I am seriously considering picking up a hard copy soon.

Edit: Ok, it looks like that a revised PDF is still in the works, but will hopefully be available soon. There are clarifying documents that make things playable on their website though.

It is true that Dogs would be a good system for someone to use with their kids. I wouldn't use the default setting, but the mechanics are light, easy to adapt, and encourage role-playing.

What I'm really looking for though is something I can give to them and they can play on their own without supervision. It'll be a few years before they are ready for that level of reading, but I want to be prepared for when they can handle it. Maybe I should adapt Dogs and write a Fairies in the Vineyard specially for them.

Dogs in the Vineyard is a really non-violent game if you want it to be. You are playing police so you have a gun, but like any police officer you get in trouble if you use too much violence. Plus each game session is based around a moral. The key would be for your brother to choose morals he wants to teach his children.

On a side note, we usually change the 4 levels of conflict from non-physical, physical, fighting, and gunfighting to talking, threatening, non-deadly force, and deadly force. Your brother could easily adapt those levels to something age appropriate such as talking, insulting, bullying/threatening, and fighting or whatever fits the setting.

I haven't played it on anything but the official map myself. That thing is detailed. My DM let me go as far as letting me animate the skeletons on the map to throw at the enemy. Of course they only served as a distraction for the rogue on my team to circle around across the water and starting shooting them in the back from behind.
